When you start learning German dative, the grammar system really begins to fall into place. The dative marks the indirect object of a sentence — answering the question "to whom?" or "for whom?". It might seem complex at first, but focusing on a few key rules is all you need.
Core question: The dative answers Wem? (To whom? / For whom?). Nominative = Who? (subject), Accusative = What/Whom? (direct object), Dative = To whom? (indirect object or prepositional phrase).
Article Changes: Nominative → Dative
Definite and indefinite articles change in the dative. Memorising this table prevents the vast majority of dative mistakes:
| Gender | Nominative (Who?) | Dative (To whom?) |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine (der) | der Mann / ein Mann | dem Mann / einem Mann |
| Feminine (die) | die Frau / eine Frau | der Frau / einer Frau |
| Neuter (das) | das Kind / ein Kind | dem Kind / einem Kind |
| Plural (die) | die Männer / – | den Männern / – |
⚠️ Plural warning: In the dative, plural nouns usually add an -n suffix: die Kinder → den Kindern. If the noun already ends in -n, no extra -n is added.
Dative Prepositions (Dativpräpositionen)
Certain prepositions always require the dative. Memorising this list is very useful:
Common contractions: von dem → vom, zu dem → zum, zu der → zur, bei dem → beim. Writing them out separately is grammatically correct, but in speech they are always contracted.
Dative Verbs
Some verbs require the dative directly — not the accusative. The most common ones:
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| helfen | to help | Ich helfe dem Kind. (I help the child.) |
| danken | to thank | Ich danke dir. (I thank you.) |
| gehören | to belong to | Das Buch gehört meinem Freund. (The book belongs to my friend.) |
| gefallen | to please / to like | Das gefällt mir. (I like this.) |
| glauben | to believe | Ich glaube dir. (I believe you.) |
| antworten | to answer | Sie antwortet dem Lehrer. (She answers the teacher.) |
Personal Pronouns in the Dative
