German Plural:
5 Types, Clear Rules

Unlike English or many other languages, German has 5 main plural types — but once you know the patterns, it all clicks into place.

In English, forming plurals is mostly straightforward: just add "-s" or "-es." In German, things are more varied — each noun has its own plural form that often needs to be learned individually. However, the vast majority of nouns follow one of 5 main patterns. Learning these patterns dramatically improves your ability to guess the plural of any new word.

Key rule: In the plural, the article is always die — regardless of gender. der Hund → die Hunde · die Frau → die Frauen · das Kind → die Kinder

5 Main Plural Types

The cards below show each type with examples. Pay special attention to cases where an umlaut (ä, ö, ü) is added — this is a very common pattern.

-e
Most common type
der Tag → die Tage
der Hund → die Hunde
der Tisch → die Tische
die Nacht → die Nächte
-er
Mostly neuter
das Kind → die Kinder
das Buch → die Bücher
das Haus → die Häuser
der Mann → die Männer
-en / -n
Feminine nouns
die Frau → die Frauen
die Schule → die Schulen
die Zeitung → die Zeitungen
die Straße → die Straßen
-(e)s
Foreign-origin words
das Auto → die Autos
das Café → die Cafés
das Hotel → die Hotels
der Chef → die Chefs
unchanged
Stays the same
der Lehrer → die Lehrer
das Messer → die Messer
der Fahrer → die Fahrer
das Zimmer → die Zimmer

✦ Umlaut change present (a→ä, o→ö, u→ü)

Gender and Plural Tendencies

While every plural type can occur with any gender, there are strong tendencies. Knowing these increases your chances of guessing correctly:

Gender Most common plural Example
der (masculine) -e or unchanged der Hund → die Hunde
die (feminine) -en / -n die Frau → die Frauen
das (neuter) -er or unchanged das Kind → die Kinder
Foreign-origin -s das Auto → die Autos
Masculine ending in -er unchanged der Lehrer → die Lehrer

⚠️ Exception warning: "die Mutter → die Mütter" and "die Tochter → die Töchter" only take an umlaut — no extra ending. These need to be memorised separately.

Tips for Learning Plurals

📖

Check the Dictionary

When learning a new word, note its plural right away. Dictionaries show it as "Hund, -e" or "Buch, ¨-er".

🎯

Learn in Groups

Feminine nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit all take -en: die Wohnungen, die Freiheiten. Learning these groups saves a lot of time.

🔄

Watch for Umlauts

Umlaut changes are especially common with -e and -er endings. Mark examples like "Buch → Bücher" separately.

📱

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Plurals are best learned through spaced repetition. Flashcard apps are extremely effective for this.
