German has two question types: W-Fragen (open questions starting with a question word) and Ja/Nein-Fragen (yes/no questions). Both follow strict word order rules — the verb always comes second in W-questions and first in yes/no questions.

⚠️ Doch! — This is one of the most uniquely German words. When someone asks a question with a negative (e.g. "Du sprichst kein Deutsch, oder?" = "You don't speak German, do you?") and the answer is YES, you say Doch! — not "Ja!" Using "Ja" here would mean agreeing with the negative.
