Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs — they carry their own meaning but modify the meaning of the main verb in a sentence. They express concepts like ability, obligation, permission, and desire.

The sentence structure is: Subject + modal verb (conjugated, position 2) + … + main verb (infinitive, at the end).

Structure: Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. — modal verb in position 2, main verb (infinitive) at the very end.

🎯

Main Verb Always Last

In sentences with modal verbs, the main verb (infinitive) always goes to the very end: "Ich kann gut Deutsch sprechen."

🔑

ich = er/sie/es

Modal verbs are the same in 1st and 3rd person singular: ich kann = er kann. Learn this once and never forget it.

💬

möchten for Politeness

Use möchten instead of wollen for polite requests: "Ich möchte einen Kaffee." sounds much more courteous.

Questions

The modal verb moves to the front: "Kannst du mir helfen?" / "Müssen wir gehen?"

Test Yourself

Context: your friend is sick. Fill in the blank:

Er ___ heute nicht kommen.
✓ kann (he is not able to — he's sick and cannot come)
